Jobless and sleepless too

No job – no sleep.

Tossing and turning in your sleep seems to be an additional strain on jobless Americans.  The unemployed are looking for full-time work and a good night’s rest according to a Consumer Reports’ survey.  In the survey the unemployed (69%) say they are more likely to have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep respective to the (59%) employed who also indicated sleep troubles.

The most common problem according to the respondents, sans employment status, was trouble staying asleep.  One in three woke up three or more times during a typical night.

Asked what is keeping them up at night, “work related stress” was the most common answer (47%) followed by health problems (28%) and financial woes (22%).

Many of the respondents of the survey noted that they had tried over the counter sleep medications or prescription medication but reported side effects such as next-day drowsiness.

Given the potential side effects of sleep medications, Consumer Reports recommends trying behavioral modification such as upgrading your mattress and pillow.

You may be tempted to take a sleep medication as a “cure-all” but first commit to making your sleep habits and sleep environment more conducive to sleep.

“Lifestyle can also have a huge impact on sleep and sleep quality, “according to Michelle Hanchey president of 8ight a company that markets a natural sleep hologram.. “Make sleep a priority by going to bed and waking up at the same time each day – even weekends. Try to avoid paying bills, talking on the phone or engaging in stressful activities just before bed”, says Michelle.

An advocate of natural sleep she offers these additional tips:

  •  Establish a Soothing Pre-Sleep Routine
  • Avoid Caffeine, Alcohol, Nicotine, and Other Chemicals that Interfere with Sleep
  • Turn Your Bedroom into a Sleep-Inducing Environment with a comfortable sheets, mattress and pillow in a dark, quiet room between 60-75F.
  • Finish dinner several hours before bedtime and avoid foods that cause indigestion.
